What happened
On 22 October 2024, Character.AI published Community Safety Updates, describing six months of investment in trust-and-safety staffing and a pop-up, already live, that appears when a user's message references self-harm or suicide and directs them to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The same post previewed changes still coming: a distinct model for users under 18 meant to reduce exposure to sensitive content, and a notification after an hour-long session. On 12 December 2024, a second post, How Character.AI Prioritizes Teen Safety, confirmed those features had shipped.
What the documents show
The December post states plainly that 'this initiative has resulted in two distinct models and user experiences on the Character.AI platform — one for teens and one for adults,' with added classifiers on model outputs and new detection of risky user inputs for everyone. It describes a parental-controls feature, then planned for the first quarter of 2025, that would show a parent a child's time on the platform and their most-used Characters. It also revises the in-chat disclaimer so that a Character named 'psychologist' or 'therapist' carries an explicit note not to rely on it for professional advice.
The mechanism
The core change is a second, separately guided model rather than a single model with a toggle: teen accounts are routed to a version trained and filtered to reduce romantic and sensitive content, while adult accounts continue on the standard model. That is a different mechanism from a content filter applied after generation, though the December post says both are in use together, blocking some outputs and separately screening user inputs that tend to provoke them.
What it leaves open
Neither post states how Character.AI verifies that an account claiming to be an adult is actually 18 or older, a gap that becomes central to the platform's later, more drastic step of removing open-ended teen chat entirely in 2025. Neither document gives a usage figure for the crisis pop-up or the time-spent notification. Editorially, the two posts read as an escalating, incremental response, each one narrower in scope than what critics and lawsuits filed around the same period were describing.
- What technical method, if any, confirms a user's declared age at signup?
- Does a second model for teens change the platform's underlying training data, or only its output filters?
- What did the promised Q1 2025 parental-controls feature look like once it shipped?
Read together, the two 2024 posts mark the point at which Character.AI moved from a single-model, single-disclaimer product to a platform explicitly built around two different user experiences by age, a distinction that later regulatory and legal scrutiny would treat as a starting baseline rather than an endpoint.
