Inflection's founders left for Microsoft; Pi kept running

What happened

On 19 March 2024, Inflection AI published The new Inflection: An important change to how we'll work, announcing that two of its three co-founders, Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, were leaving to start a new group at Microsoft. The same day, Microsoft confirmed that Suleyman and Simonyan were joining to form Microsoft AI, a new organisation focused on Copilot and other consumer AI products, with Suleyman becoming its chief executive.

What the documents show

Inflection's post states that several members of the Inflection team also moved to Microsoft, without naming a number, while Microsoft's post separately confirms 'several members of the Inflection team have chosen to join Mustafa and Karén,' calling them 'some of the most accomplished AI engineers, researchers, and builders in the world' — the same event described from both sides in compatible terms, with the headcount unspecified in either. Inflection's post names a new chief executive, Sean White, and states that third co-founder Reid Hoffman 'will continue on our board.' On the product itself, Inflection states plainly: 'There will be no immediate changes to the service,' and that privacy and data policies for users 'remain in place and unchanged.'

The mechanism

The business-model shift described in the same post is a pivot from a consumer, subscription-style personal assistant toward what Inflection calls an AI studio model: licensing and hosting its Inflection-2.5 model, including a new hosting arrangement on Microsoft Azure, for enterprise and developer customers. That is a different revenue mechanism from Pi's original personal-companion framing — the company's continued existence increasingly depends on business customers paying for model access, while Pi's individual users continue on a product the post describes as otherwise unchanged.

What it leaves open

Neither document commits to Pi's continuity beyond the immediate term; 'no immediate changes' is explicitly a statement about the present, not a guarantee about the product's future roadmap or investment level once the founders who built its personality had left.
